The Greek language is among the most deeply and intensely studied languages known, yet most scholarly attention has been focused on Ancient Greek, including Homeric, Classical, and New Testament Greek. Within the past few decades, however, interest in the latter stages of Greek — Byzantine, Medieval, and especially Modern Greek — has increased. In view of this heightened awareness of the contribution that the linguistic examination of the latter stages of Greek can make, the Journal of Greek Linguistics (JGL) focuses on the more recent stages of the language.

The Journal of Greek Linguistics will publish high quality papers on any aspect of Greek linguistics — phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, etc., whether from a synchronic or a diachronic perspective — with a preference for papers presenting a theoretically-informed description and/or analysis of data from any stage of the language, including the Koine and the Medieval periods, that can illuminate the more recent stages of the language, especially contemporary (Modern) Greek.
