Annotation

This pragmatics textbook uses the principle of relevance to explain linguistic phenomena. Section I consists of a theoretical preamble and a discussion of concepts such as communication, inference, context and the semantics-pragmatics distinction. Section II discusses explicature and introduces concepts such as speech acts, reference assignment and recovery of ellipsed material. Section III deals with implicature and concepts such as implicit meanings, interpretation of figurative utterances and discourse connectives.
