Annotation

In a Gricean approach, 'and' has recently been regarded as equivalent to logical conjunction, and its variation in meaning is attributed exclusively to the operation of pragmatic rules of conversation. In contrast to this approach B. and P. propose that the central feature of the meaning of 'and' is the notion of 'semantic command': the second conjunct (S'') is not prior to the first (S'), neither chronologically nor causally.
