Annotation
This paper demonstrates how metadiscourse (the "discourse about discourse") hinges on rhetorical context and intended audience. Following a taxonomy of metadiscourse functions, it is suggested that metadiscourse exemplifies how context and meaning allow readers to forge intended interpretations. For writers, metadiscourse constructs relevant contexts and alludes to shared disciplinary knowledge.
