Based on an Italian corpus: this paper documents the handling process of linguistic misunderstanding: the author of the repair, the negotiation phases, the collocation of the repair, non-linguistic issues. It is concluded that misunderstanding should be seen as a continuum of comprehension and miscomprehension, rather than a polar process (absence/presence of comprehension).
