Annotation

This study illustrates how apparent miscommunication can be used by speakers to establish an implicit mutual understanding. Drawing on the distinction between I-level and We-level meanings, it is argued that essential to I-level miscommunication and We-level mutual understanding is the validity of speakers' mutual familiarity assessments of given information.
