Annotation

Based on the analysis of videotaped conversations between native speakers of American English, semantic, discourse, and communicative functions of speaker head movements are reported on. It is found that patterns of speaker head movements, can be associated with semantic meaning, expressions of inclusivity and intensification, uncertain statements, lexical repairs, locating referents in abstract space, switches between direct and indirect discourse, and backchannel cues.
