Annotation

An evaluation of data-gathering methods in pragmatics based on an empirical study of southwestern (Kunming) Mandarin Chinese compliments and compliment responses. It is found that oral discourse completion tasks produce more features of natural speech than written discourse completion tasks do and that field notes provide realistic data. These findings lead the author to conclude that choosing a data gathering method must be based on research questions and objectives.
