Annotation

Seeing that human language use cannot escape a (postmodern) sense of language preformedness and intertextuality, the author argues that indirect ways of speaking (irony, sarcasm, parody, ritual speech, etc.) are self-conscious attempts to avoid using the actual referential content of talk. Such language is seen as a ritualized version of plain talk which is fundamental to human language.
