Three general introductory chapters on (i) language universals (including a section on functional and pragmatic explanations), (ii) language typology, and (iii) theoretical prerequisites (including a discussion of pragmatic roles), are followed by topical chapters on word order, subject, case marking, relative clauses, causative constructions, and animacy. Considerations on the relationship between typological and historical linguistics are added in a final chapter.
