Annotation

Using Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory as a descriptive framework, this paper considers the discourse marker WELL as a signpost which directs the way in which the adressee has to process the following utterance, whilst disregarding context accessibility. The analysis distinguishes four main uses of WELL: as an insufficiency marker; as a face-threat mitigator; as a frame; and as a delay device.
