This paper examines the use of negation in Spanish and English suggestions and requests. It is demonstrated that this use doesn't serve to soften or mitigate the proposition in either way. If Brown and Levinson's notions of positive and negative politeness easily apply to suggestions, they do not to requests, as they do not account for differences in force, generated by the negative in both languages.
