This paper investigates whether central aspects of 'universal pragmatics' such as conversational maxims and validity claims, offer a sustainable conceptual framework for analyzing recorded strategic magistrate/defendant and police/suspect discourse. As it is found that this framework cannot adequately handle natural language data, H. proposes an alternative model for future work which could handle strategic discourse but is grounded in an emprical pragmatics.
