Annotation

This paper examines Hong Kong business meeting request strategies, used to gain compliance and cooperation, by both native and nonnative English speaking parties. Despite the nature of the setting, indirectness is still important. As nonnative English speakers use few request strategies, it is not possible to identify differences between Chinese and Western judgments on appropriate politeness.
