Annotation

A discussion of the role of intentions in interpreting speech, on the basis of data collected during field work in a Western Samoan village. It is argued that Samoan communication cannot be explained in terms of the notion of 'intentional meaning', but that a socio-historically oriented approach to cognitive processes, and a dialogically oriented approach to meaning are necessary.
