This paper describes the grammaticalization of the Swedish word bara (Eng. just) in current adolescent speech. It is shown that the recent foregrounding function can be inferred from the meaning of bara in standard use, and that the recent quotative function has developed out of this foregrounding function. In both these developments, crucial characteristics of narratives, and the way quotations are used within these, play an important role.
