This chapter discusses recent research in cross-cultural pragmatics (CCP) as distinct from interlanguage pragmatics (IP). The main difference lies in the perspective on cross-cultural communication. According to CCP, individuals from different societies or communities interact according to their own pragmatic norms, which often leads to clashes of expectations and intergroup misperceptions. The overview of this body of research shows the potential contribution of applied linguistics to mutual understanding via the study of discourse issues in cross-cultural pragmatics.
