Annotation

This article explores, via the case of routine gratitude acknowledgments, why speakers choose figurative ways of speaking when misinterpretation can pose particularly severe difficulties. The findings suggest that gratitude acknowledgments rated as highly nonliteral express greater politeness and esteem than those rated as more literal. So at least some of the pragmatic functions of the more nonliteral versions appear to be worth the risk of misinterpretation.
