This paper tests the assumption that routine formulae code culture, and that social change entails changes in the formulaic inventory of a speech community, by examining changes to the formulaic speech in postrevolutionary China, and in particular during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. The new formulae both seem to code (some) old and new social facts.
