Annotation

This article investigates the function of playful language in peer interactions between preadolescent girlfriends. The applied methodology combines conversational analysis, interactional sociolinguistics an cultural feminist ethnography. One of the major results is that alliance building is not restricted to supportive behaviours. Playful confrontation alternates with name-calling and insulting, thus distinguishing the talk from that of earlier childhood and adult discourse.
