Annotation

An account of the structure of discourse in general illustrated with examples from Japanese. H.'s analysis is based on the notions of registry (i.e. a list of concepts to which various rules may apply) and reticulum (i.e. a network of relations between the factors relevant for discourse organization). The performative analysis is used to account for parts of the system of Japanese honorifics.
