This paper argues that the differences between the Japanese discourse connectives dakara and sorede, which been analyzed as encoding a cause–consequence relationship, but are not always interchangeable, have to be accounted for in terms of the particular constraints they put on the contexts in which the utterances containing them are interpreted.
