This study describes how the leaders of an English language teaching group in a Hong Kong public education institute negotiated different personal identities for themselves via the discourse of the request e-mails sent to their subordinates. The e-mail authors’ legitimate or position power linked their abilties as leaders didn't suffice in acquiring request compliance; additional elements such as desirable personal identities were thereto required.
