Annotation

A report on an exploratory study on foreign language learners' comprehension of speech acts and discourse functions. More particularly, two types of learners' pragmatic misunderstandings are analyzed, viz. their failure to distinguish between phatic and referential talk, and to identify the intended illocutionary force of indirect speech acts.
