This study focuses on highly conventionalized ways of being playful when buying lottery tickets at Finnish convenience stores, instead of following the more usual, serious way of interacting, by invoking the frame of another type of institutional encounter. It is suggested that the motivations for this playfulness are linked to the activity's recurrent nature and an eventual delicacy involved in playing the lottery.
