Annotation

This paper argues that, as most of the referent honorifics employed in an analyzed Japanese company's committee meeting, are used in requests and descriptions of a third, absent party, nor Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, nor Ide's ‘discernment’ notion alone can properly explain the usages of the referent honorifics here.
