Annotation

This study discusses how, prior to 1918, Belgian colonial rulers in the Congo combined principles of indirect rule at the domain of political, administrative and judicial organisation with assimilationist ones in the fields of language and culture. The post-World War I adaptationist practice, always implicated a management of, and active interference into, the pre-colonial linguistic and cultural variety.
