Annotation

L. argues that in order to predict correctly the applicability of many grammatical rules, one has to refer to assumptions about the context of the utterance and to other assumptions made by the participants in the discourse. This contrasts with the traditional goal of transformational grammar which was to make such predictions on the basis of syntactic environment alone.
