Annotation

L. argues that the linguistic conception of language is deeply influenced by a long tradition of analyzing only written language: its conceptual apparatus turns out to be more apt for written language in surprisingly many and fundamental aspects. L. tries to trace back the origins of this bias, and demonstrates its impact on linguistics and the overall theory in language, grammar, semantics, and linguistic variation.
