Annotation

Five experiments show that the ease of processing active and passive sentences is a function of the prior coding of a perceptual event: when the event is coded in terms of the actor, active sentences are easier, when the event is coded in terms of the receiver of the action, passives are easier. Implications for the processing of actives and passives are discussed.
