Different argumentative roles of stereotypes as expressions of common knowledge are discussed. In German, the particles 'ja', 'eben' and 'doch' serve as markers for the common knowledge as a prerequisite for implicatures from the semantic to the interactional level of interpretation. The conclusions are based on the analysis of four actual German conversations.
