Rintell, Ellen M. 1981. Sociolinguistic variation and pragmatic ability: A look at learners. International Journal of the Sociology of Language 27 : 11–34.

Annotation

R. examines the ways in which Spanish speaking adults, learning English, perform two speech acts, request and suggestion, with particular attention to the way their language is sensitive to aspects of the relationship between speaker and hearer. Specifically, she looks at the variation of the level of deference conveyed by these speakers as a function of the age and sex of the addressee.
