Elle est parfois dynamique, formelle, fonctionnelle ou communicative, mais aussi pragmatique, textuelle, totale ou approximative. Elle est affaire de connotation, de dénotation, de typologie des textes. Elle peut être unique, multiple, absente ou sémantique, porter sur le sens, le contenu, le style ou encore le lexique… C’est un fait : les variétés d’équivalence sont légion – et l’on en parle depuis qu’existe la traduction. Plus près de nous, selon Mary Snell-Hornby (1988 : 18-19), c’est l’article de Roman Jakobson, « Aspects linguistiques de la traduction », qui, en 1959, a placé cette notion au cœur d’un débat houleux, qui devait marquer les décennies suivantes. Pour Kevin Windle et Anthony Pym, les « premières définitions de l’équivalence » remontent plutôt à la Stylistique comparée du français et de l’anglais (1958) de Jean-Paul Vinay et Jean Darbelnet (Windle et Pym 2011 : 16). Wolfram Wills, pour sa part, va jusqu’à déclarer que ce concept est au coeur de la réflexion théorique sur la traduction depuis l’Antiquité (Wills 1977 : 156).
