This chapter discusses some perspectives on the role of the interpreter. First, the author considers the basic elements of translation situations. He then talks about the roles of the interpreter and states some hypotheses about the translator’s behaviour. Some of those hypotheses are: the interpreter as bilingual, ambiguities and conflicts of the interpreter role, power and the interpreter, etc. The role of the interpreter is observed here in relation to others involved in bilingual or multilingual interaction.
