Abstract

Literature is an artificial system which, in relation to other social systems, operates under five main constraints: patronage, aesthetic codes, natural language, the universe of discourse and, at the level of translation, the notion of original authorship. All these constraints interact to establish dominant literatures in which rewriting plays at least as important a role as original authorship in the attempt to understand trends and canons.
