Abstract

This book is an investigation of problems and possibilities in the translation of literature, more especially poetry. The investigation is based on a comparison between Catullus’ 64th poem and English translations of it published between 1870 and 1970. Several strategies for translating are analysed and their comparative merits and demerits discussed. Analysis is complemented by evaluation, and evaluation leads, in its turn, to the construction of a blueprint which might serve as a guideline for translation of poems, and literature in general. The book also tries to describe the position translation (and Translation Studies) could (and should) occupy in the wider context of the study of (comparative) literature. Throughout, the book refers to its predecessors in the field and attempts to further develop, evaluate or contradict their ideas.
