This study evaluates positivist and pluralist conceptions of linguistic historiography in the light of recent theoretical developments in history, linguistics, semiotics, and hermeneutics. They support a pluralist conception as the positivist one ignores the semiotic, dialogic, and historical dimensions of interpretation.
