This article explores some methodological problems involved in a discourse-centered investigation of societal ideologies, in particular of publicly accessible European discourse related to interethnic conflicts, ethnic or national identity construction, and nation-building processes. It argues for the use of a pragmatic concept of contrastiveness, which distinguishes forms of variability that are to be found between languages or within a single language, a language variety, a text, and even a sentence.
