This rhetorical study examines the use of interpersonal metadiscourse in applied linguistics papers written in English by Anglo-American and Iranian academics. The observed differences are attributed to the extent of rhetorical sensitivity to and consciousness of audience, purpose, cultural tendencies, and the properties of the disciplinary genre.
