Annotation: | This article reviews a great part of the research on linguistic politeness to evaluate current politeness theories and to draw guidelines for future politeness studies. The issues addressed comprise the distinction of politeness as strategic conflict avoidance and social indexing; the linguistic enactment of politeness; social and psychological factors determining politeness forms and functions; the impact of discourse type on politeness; and the counterpart to politeness, i.e. rudeness. |
