Abstract

Synchronization is one of the major characteristics of dubbing. In this article, the author claims that it is the translator who must take care of synchronization, as it conveys textual operations requiring knowledge of source and target language, and knowledge of translation strategies and techniques, something that no toher figure involved in the process of audiovisual translation has. A review of the different approaches that synchronization has received in the field of Translation Studies is offered. Three types of synchrony are discussed: lip-sync, kinetic synchrony and isochrony. Finally, the article presents a series of relevant translational factors that have to be taken into account in the analysis of synchronization. An analysis of these factors is made in order to understand the existence of different norms in different audiovisual genres and audiovisual landscapes.
