Abstract

Revolutionary songs as La Marseillaise and La Carmagnole had been exported to Latin America by the end of ht 18thc century, in the midst of the emancipation effervescence. As other texts that contributed to the independence movement, those songs were deliberately translated, transformed and adapted. This article describes the fate of these two songs in Venezuela (and more generally in Latin America). It emphasizes the nature and extension of the transformations in the Spanish translation as well as the translator's strategy. It is based on a discourse and comparative analysis in order to show the influence of those translations on the historical process of emancipation in Latin America. We could easily think that such imported ideas were merely copied and then adopted, but if they were assimilated, it is because the were adapted.
