Abstract

In present-day china explicit description of sex and sensitive political issues are the two main forbidden zones in the publication sector and the media, including published translations. Censorship may take several forms besides deletion, such as attenuation, mis-translation, denouncement in the text, the title or the preface, and disclaimer. In the few cases where information about the publication process is available, it is mainly the editors who act as the censors. Generally speaking, faithfulness is the norm that translators adhere to as best as they can, and it is also the expectancy norms of readers. However, this translational norm is overruled by ideological norms for editors, the reason being that it is usually the publishing houses, not the translators, who are penalized for their “errors”. To talk about such censorship in the People’s Republic of China is not allowed either. Containing such material, a chapter in a book of the author has been deleted by the editor of a university press of Beijing in 2004. Recent developments seem to indict that while political and ideological dissidence is still forbidden, control over descriptions of sex is relaxing.
