Abstract

This chapter discusses several aspects of stylistics and translation. It starts off by pointing out the paradox of stylistics and translation. It explains that especially for a literary translator, it is essential to understand the style of the source text and that the translator is able to recreate similar stylistic effects in the target text are essential. Yet stylistics has played a surprisingly small role in translation theory. The chapter continues with explaining the importance of style, and goes into contextualised stylistics and the translation context. In conclusion, it discusses how stylistics relates to reading for translation, to the writing of translation, and to translation practice.
