Abstract

The term “public service translation” is used in this chapter in the same sense as “community translation”, which Niska (2002: 135) defines as “written translation of mainly informative texts, addressed by authorities or institutions to people who do not understand texts in the language of the text producer”. The chapter discusses what publications there are on the subject and why there are so few. It then goes into the current state of service provision and training in PST. To conclude, it presents a brief discussion of the translator’s role in communication and the use of register.
