Abstract

This chapter seeks to explore the descriptive and normative dimensions of the “stretch and snap” phenomenon in legal translation theory. It argues that legal translation theory misconceives both the “legal” and “translation” aspects of the legal translation enterprise. It also goes into the question why legal translation matters and discusses what constitutes a legal text. To conclude, it goes into translation method and doctrine and pays special attention to fidelity, equivalence and ethics when translating legal texts.
