Abstract

This chapter discusses several aspects of courtroom or court interpreting. For the interpreter, it is vital to understand factors such as national legal systems, the type of the court, and the type of case, so that he knows what to expect and how to prepare for an assignment. The chapter therefore goes into court interpreting practices and principles of interpreter use. Furthermore, it discusses the interpreter’s role and professional ethics. As achieving accuracy in courtroom interpreting is fraught with difficulty, attention is also paid to interpreting accuracy and the obstacles which might hinder a good interpreting performance. Lastly, the chapter discusses interpreter training and educating interpreter-users.
