Abstract
This chapter provides a survey of the history and characteristics of subtitling, the technical aspects of subtitling such as screenspace, speed of dialogue, and transfer to written dialogue. It briefly describes the ethics of subtitling and goes into the narrative stakes of subtitling decisions.
