Abstract

This study attempts to assess the impact of Berman's theories in Latin America. As a translator from Spanish, Berman was deeply influenced by cultural, intellectual and human values conveyed by Latin American Spanish. He had its 'way-of-being-a-language' beautifully re-expressed in his translations. Such a sensitive identification with the Latin American socio-cultural world led him to be very close, in many instances and in different ways, to this part of the world. What has Berman's contribution been to translation studies in Latin America? Did he find supporters with his speeches, seminars and writings? What are the consequences of this impact in the way Latin America aims to approach translation studies in the future? A survey involving some fifty faculty members, researchers and translators from Latin America and Spain attempts to find answers to these questions.
