The ambiguity in the English translation of “yishuxueyuan” leads to a potential misunderstanding in international exchanges. Following a description of the naming patterns of art-related educational institutions in the UK and the US, this paper explores the semantic evolution of“art”in the western culture and gives some suggestions on how to translate “yishuxueyuan”.
